The fluids episode!
- Water runs occasionally. And sporadically. Sometimes it's a trickle, sometimes there are some pascals behind it. But one thing that running water never does is run on schedule. Sometimes I get water one hour a day. Sometimes 6 hours a day. Sometimes 5 minutes a day. I keep a spigot open and a bucket underneath it to capture a few gallons whenever the water gods deem me worthy of an H2O delivery. The water in this bucket is all I have to brush my teeth, bathe, flush my toilet and wash my hands until the next time water flows through the pipes.
- Fluids come in bags. It's a common sight in Honduras to see folks walking around on a hot day (which is every day here in Trujillo) sucking on clear or light blue bags. These pouches are found at every cafeteria, pulperia, and churro-vending hole in the wall and can be bought for 2 Lempiras. Each one contains 0.5L of water. But water isn't the only fluid that comes in bags. Sodas do too. Well, not at first. Sodas come in glass bottles, which the store needs to keep in order to get the deposit back. So if you want your soda to go, bag it up! The cashier will pour your soda into a little baggie, stick a straw in the top, and you're good to go.
- The National Soda of Honduras. Well, not really, but Hondurans love it. Tropical Banana it's called. Banana-flavored soda. And not, you know, real banana flavored, but that fake radioactive banana flavor that cheap hard candies were flavored with in the 80's. I've lost count of the number of times I've had to choke down a glass of the stuff in order to be polite. Yum.

Spent a few months in Honduras, courtesy of the US Army and fell in lurve with that electric-yellow banana soda. Can't find it in the States at all, and can't remember the brand name to look it up online. *sniff, sob*
I love that banana soda! There's a central american grocery store across the street from my apartment that sells it. I'm sure any ethnic food store like that would be able to get ahold of some for you if you asked.
That's so rude! Bananino Tropical is absolutely delicious (and I wish I could order it here) if your Gringo self dislikes it drink Coca Cola and no one would care, nor woulld they be offended. Colombia has a similar soda called Colombiana and it is also good. I looooove the flavor of bananino and actually they do make it with some real banana, the flavor is exquisite to me, all rich and bubbbly and offset with that smooth dulcet sweetness with a slight taste of banana and yet it really doesn't taste like banana. It's unique. I want to order it, and don't act like they made you drink it pendejo, I'm Catracha so I know. There are many options in pulperias or whatever. Choose something else! ~_~ They offer it because we do consider it to be the best thing on earth but if you dislike it so much drink something else, and I know Hispanics are polite hosts the first thing you are ALWAYS offered to drink is Coca Cola. I know, seriously, if you were offered bananino straight off the bat they like you and want to share their joy but just say no if you dislike it. I hate anything made with milk (for desserts like Tres Leches) and I say no just fine. Stop bitching about it and drink something else cabron. I'm so jealous though, it's been 16 years since I drank that stuff and I can't order it online. Noooooo! 8-(
I was there also in 2010 (Enrique Soto Cano Air Base) and it's called Tropical Banana Soda. The brand is Tropical. I had to mail me some back as well as pack it with my luggage. I had enough to speak over 6 months.
